Arak (IP) - The secondary circuit of Iran's Arak nuclear reactor is to be operational today (23 December) with the presence of the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi.

Iran Press/Iran News: Modernized Arak Heavy Water Research Reactor has been designed with the aim of gaining experience and know-how in the design and construction of nuclear reactors, training of personnel, research and development (R&D) facilities in the fields of neutron physics, thermohydraulics and treatment, and radioisotope production for use in medical, industrial and agricultural fields.

The reactor was redesigned by a team of experts to the highest international standards.

The Arak reactor has two circuits. The first circuit is responsible for removing heat from the heart of the reactor and the second one for transmitting heat to the cooling towers and to the environment.

The secondary circuit comprises heat exchangers for the middle pool of transmission pumps (hot water - cooling towers and cold water return pumps) and is operated through the main reactor control room.

To start the first circuit of the Arak Heavy Water Research Reactor, a secondary circuit and related associated systems had to be set up first. The completion of the first circuit and the passive start-up of the Arak reactor are the next stages.
