Iran's top diplomat in the Iraqi city of Karbala said the situation was under control outside the Iranian mission in the city after an unknown crowd caused disorder outside the mission.

Iran PressMiddle East: "The situation is back to normal and under control," Consul General Mir Masood Hoseinian said on Monday following the mob's stoning of the consulate and lowering Iran's flag.

Local police authorities also said security forces have the situation under their control.

A group of unknown people had gathered outside Iran's Consulate General in Karbala, Iraq on Sunday night.

Earlier on that day, Iraqi security forces managed to identify and arrest a United Arab Emirates spying team consisting of several Lebanese and Iraqi nationals in the capital Baghdad.
