A senior Chinese commander has issued a stark warning that the People's Liberation Army is prepared for war at any moment to thwart any attempts at Taiwan's independence.

Why it matters:

The ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan have escalated, particularly following the election of pro-independence leader Lai Ching-te in Taiwan. This situation raises concerns about regional stability and the potential for military conflict.

Context:

The remarks from Lin Xiangyang, head of the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese military, come during a meeting in Beijing marking the 20th anniversary of the Anti-Secession Law. The law serves as a legal basis for opposing Taiwan's independence and promotes the idea of reunification, including provisions for the use of "non-peaceful means" under specific conditions.

What he's saying:

Lin stated, "If Taiwan separatists are belligerent or even engage in desperate activities, Beijing will take all necessary measures to severely punish them."

He further emphasized, "If foreign forces are determined to create tension and turmoil in cross-strait relations, the Chinese military will punish them severely."

Key points:

  • It is the first time a front-line commander of the People's Liberation Army has spoken at such an event.
