The Ukrainian Foreign Minister announced on Friday morning that a fire had broken out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Iran PressEurope: Zaporizhzhia is the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine as well as in Europe. This power plant is equipped with 6 nuclear reactors.

The Ukrainian foreign minister claimed that the plant had caught fire due to attacks by the Russian army.

According to experts, if the nuclear plant explodes, there will be a nuclear explosion 10 times stronger than the Chernobyl disaster.

Dmytro Humenyuk of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety told Hromadske that the power units have several layers of fuel protection. The plant generates 25% of Ukraine's electricity.

Shortly after the report of a fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said there had been no change in reported radiation levels.

The Chernobyl nuclear accident that occurred on April 26, 1986, resulted in two explosions at the plant's reactor No. 4, which killed 31 people on the spot.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant is currently under Russian control.

On Wednesday, 24 February morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially announced a special military operation against Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin says he had no other choice than to launch the military operation to stop the Ukrainian military’s interference in two eastern republics that have broken away from Ukraine. Russia perceives NATO’s eastward expansion as a threat.

Moscow launched a military operation against its neighbor this week, arguing that it was defending the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, which broke off from the eastern part of Ukraine shortly after the 2014 coup in Kyiv. Ukraine said the move was an act of unprovoked aggression. 219
