Selwan Momika, 38, who gained notoriety for burning copies of the Quran in Sweden, was found dead in an apartment building south of Stockholm, Swedish media confirmed.

The Big Picture:

Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee in Sweden, gained notoriety in 2023 for blasphemy as he burnt copies of the Holy Quran during Islamophobic actions in Europe. His actions, permitted by Swedish police under free-speech laws, led to widespread outrage and condemnation among Muslims worldwide.

What They Are Saying:

  • Police said they were alerted to a shooting Wednesday night at an apartment building in Sodertalje, near Stockholm, and found a man with gunshot wounds who later died.
  • Judge Göran Lundahl of Stockholm District Court confirmed that the deceased was Momika but has no information on when and how Momika died.

Context:

Momika and a co-defendant were charged in August with incitement to hatred because of statements they made in connection with the Quran burnings.
