Iran Press/ Middle East: According to Yemen news agency, which is affiliated to Sanaa's government, the forces of the army and the Yemeni popular committees repelled the advance of Saudi-led coalition forces into the Kofel Heights in the city of Sarwah in Yemen's central Arab province of Ma'rib, inflicting heavy casualties.
Among those killed in the Saudi coalition were the commander of the 310th Brigade and the head of the operation, Hamid al-Dusturi, and Khalid al-Jama'i, the commander of the 72nd Brigade of the resigned government forces, Yemeni resigned President Mansour Hadi.
Yemeni army forces and popular committees also took control of areas and military bases north of the city of Ma'rib on Thursday.
Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing Ansarullah.
The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the Saudi-led war has claimed the lives of over 60,000 Yemenis since January 2016.
The war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.
