Islamabad (IP) — On the call of Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), party workers took to the streets in large numbers to protest.

Iran PressAsia: Protesters from various cities gathered at Jinnah Avenue, the main thoroughfare in Islamabad, using secret routes to bypass police roadblocks. Despite officers placing containers to block access, demonstrators cleared the way and advanced.

The police responded by firing tear gas to disperse the crowds, while protesters retaliated by throwing stones and glass shards. As evening approached, the number of protesters swelled into the thousands, allowing them to push back police and Frontier Constabulary personnel, ultimately occupying the entrance to the Red Zone known as D Square.

In response, the government deployed additional police forces to reclaim D Square from the protesters. After further clashes, law enforcement managed to push back demonstrators.

Imran Khan issued the call for the demonstration from Adiala Jail, while Amin Khan Gandapur, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province and a key PTI figure, led the protests until he was placed under house arrest later that night.

As a result of the unrest, mobile phone services have been disrupted in Islamabad for two days, and city entrances remain closed.
