Zarif, Iraqi new FM discuss mutual ties on phone

Tehran (IP) - Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif over a telephone conversation with Iraqi Foreign Minister stressed the need to implement the agreements reached during the visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Iraq.

Iran PressIran News: Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif congratulated Fuad Hussein on his assumption of the post of Foreign Minister of the Republic of Iraq and expressed his satisfaction with the formation of the cabinet of the new Iraqi government. 

In this phone conversation, Iran's Foreign Minister stressed the need to implement the agreements reached during the visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Iraq.

During a historic and important trip after 5 years, on March 11, 2019, the President of Iran visited Iraq, the holy shrines, and met with high-ranking Iraqi officials.

At that time, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said his visit to Iraq was a turning point in bilateral relations between Tehran and Baghdad.

In the phone conversation between the Iranian Foreign minister and his newly appointed counterpart, the two sides praised the relations achieved between Baghdad and Tehran and discussed the ways to expand cooperation between the two countries.

Iraq's Parliament approved Fuad Hussein as the new Foreign Minister of the Arab country on Saturday. 

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the Iraqi Foreign Ministry today, Fuad Hussein promised to establish good relations with the neighboring countries. 

The Iraqi government cabinet consists of 22 ministers; Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi won a vote of confidence for his 15 ministers at a parliamentary session on May 7. All seven remaining ministers in the cabinet of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi including the foreign minister, received a vote of confidence from the Iraqi parliament yesterday (Saturday) after weeks of political disagreement.
