Tehran (IP) - Deputy health minister at midwifery affairs Shahla Khosravi said that 500 pregnant mothers have been hospitalized since the outbreak of Coronavirus in Iran.

Iran PressIran News: Deputy health minister at midwifery affairs Shahla Khosravi in a live video presser held live at Health ministry on Sunday stated: "Since the outbreak of coronavirus in the country, about 500 pregnant mothers have been hospitalized and 200 pregnant mothers have been treated on an outpatient basis." 

About the number of deaths among midwives during the Corona outbreak, she said, "About 240 midwives have been contracted Coronavirus and about 40 to 50 have been hospitalized. Unfortunately, three midwives died.”

She further stated, “About 20 babies tested positive for Coronavirus. However, the transfer from mother to fetus is still debatable. Our colleagues tried to screen about 600,000 pregnant mothers twice. Other tests will be conducted on these 20 babies and we will try to take the necessary measures.” 

Khosravi noted that during the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, midwives who were in hospitals volunteered to stay in hospitals and take care of Corona patients. 12,000 midwives work as healthcare workers, and about 24 million screening of pregnant women performed twice by these midwives.

May 5 has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as World Midwifery Day. This day is dedicated to honoring midwives.
