Iran envoy to Baghdad voices support to news Iraqi PM elected

Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad Iraj Masjedi in his latest tweet on Sunday said that anyone elected through the legal process enjoying the Iraqi Parliament's vote of confidence will be supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran PressMiddle East: “Iran always pays respects to the Iraqi constitution and anyone elected through the legal election process recognized by Iraqi political system,” Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad, Iraj Masjedi in his latest tweet released on Sunday voices support to new Prime Minister-designate Mustafa al-Kadhimi adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran “will support any political character who has been elected on this very basis.”

The tweet added that anyone elected through the legal process enjoying the Iraqi Parliament's vote of confidence would be supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Earlier Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman had said that Iran's stance toward the appointment of Mustafa al-Kadhimi, had been positive.

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi on Thursday (April 9) welcomed the appointment of new Prime Minister-designate Mustafa al-Kadhimi, calling the move as a right step taken in the right path.

Mousavi said the Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported independence, national sovereignty, territorial integrity and political stability in Iraq, and considers the consensus of opinions of all Iraqi political mainstreams through democratic processes as the only way to peacefully resolve disputes.

Iraqi President Barham Salih on Thursday 9 April named intelligence chief Mustafa al-Kadhimi to form a new government.

Al-Kadhimi, who has been serving as director of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service since 2016, has been mandated to form the government within 30 days as per the constitution.

The Sairoon coalition, led by religious leader Muqtada al-Sadr and Shia groups in Iraq, had agreed to nominate the intelligence chief instead of al-Zurufi. Sunni and Kurdish groups also announced their support for Al-Kadhimi.

Iraq's newly appointed Prime minister Mustafa al-Kazemi in his trilingual tweet released on Thursday as his first word as PM stressed that the new Iraqi government will prioritize the needs and the demands of the Iraqis.
