Iraq president tasks Adnan al-Zurfi with forming a new government

Tehran (IP) - Adnan al-Zurufi, a member of the al-Nasr faction, led by Haider al-Abadi (former prime minister), is a controversial Iraqi figure, who has been missioned by the president to form a transitional government on Tuesday.

Iran PressMiddle East: The Iraqi politician was identified as one of the most influential figures during the recent street protests and at three junctures, was the governor-general of Najaf (2004-2005, 2009-2013 to 2013-2015
).

Al-Zurfi has 30 days to form his cabinet which he must then put to a vote of confidence in Iraq's fractious parliament.

By the full name 'Adnan Abdul Khazir Abbas Matar al- Zurfi', Iraqi new Prime Minister was born January 1, 1966; he is a Najaf native whose political background includes membership in the Iraqi Islamic Dawa Party and has double Iraqi-American citizenship.

He would replace caretaker Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who quit in December following widespread mass demonstrations against a government that protesters see as corrupt and failing to provide them with economic opportunities and basic services.

He was one of the nominees on the seven-member committee of Shia factions, but it is still unclear whether the majority of Shia factions agree with his premiership.

Zurufi was a former official of the US-run authorities that took over Iraq after the 2003 US invasion that deposed former dictator Saddam.

Some members of the al-Nasr faction also told Iraqi media today that al- Zurfi's appointment as prime minister of the transitional government had not been made by the coalition.

Some Iraqi Islamic resistance groups, including Asaeb Ahl al-Haq (Qays al-Khazali), affiliated with the Fatah faction (Hadi al-Ameri), strongly opposed al- Zurfi's appointment as new prime minister last night saying he opposes Islamic Resistance groups and Al-Hashd al-Sha'abi.

Iraqi President Barham Salih on Tuesday designated Adnan al-Zurfi, as the country's new prime minister.

Zurfi has been tasked with forming a government within 30 days, in an attempt to overcome months of political deadlock. He must then put his cabinet to a vote of confidence in Iraq's notoriously divided parliament.

The nomination came hours after two rockets hit an Iraqi military base hosting US-led coalition and NATO troops, the third such attack within a week, without causing casualties according to military officials.
