Iraq's Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani has fractured his left thigh bone and undergone surgery at Karbala hospital, an informed source from his office said.

Iran Press/Middle East: The 89-year-old Ayatollah was subjected to twisting in the left leg that led to a fracture of the thigh bone, and he was operated on Thursday, a statement from a source in his office read.

Iraq's most revered Shiite cleric is recovering from surgery for a fractured bone following an accident in his home, officials close to the cleric said Thursday.

“The operation was successful,” said one official, adding that al-Sistani had regained consciousness following the surgery.

It said that an Iraqi medical team performed the operation. He was taken to a hospital in southern Iraq, near his home in the holy city of Najaf on Thursday morning.

Iraqi officials and diplomatic missions confirmed that Ayatollah Sistani's operation was successful. News of the surgery sparked a flurry of well-wishes on social media and from Iraqi and diplomatic officials.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said that the government was at Ayatollah Sistani's disposal to provide him with necessary care inside or outside Iraq immediately, according to a statement from his office.

Ayatollah Sistani is Iraq’s most influential Shiia cleric who has given a significant boost to the country’s stability.
