US tries to portray Iran as a warmonger: Foreign Ministry

Tehran(IP) - The Foreign Ministry in a statement said the US has tried to portray Iran as a warmonger for decades through media war and psychological warfare.

Iran PressIran news: The Foreign Ministry commented on issues surrounding the Foreign Minister's interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, noted that US efforts to portray Iran as a warmonger is a diplomatic battle against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

"This false and contradictory picture against the essence of the Islamic system has been torn apart following negotiations for Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the world realized that portrayal of the Islamic Republic of Iran as a security threat was Zionist deceit", the statement said.

Foreign Ministry with the stress on the Islamic Republic of Iran peaceful attitude to the world and United States' unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA negotiations said this is the United States of America, which has failed to comply with international laws and has avoided dialogue and violated its international obligations.

The statement highlighted that with the assassination of Martyr Lieutenant General Soleimani, the hero of the fight against terrorism, it was proved for world public opinion that it is the US government that leads the way in sponsoring terrorism worldwide.

Iran's Foreign Ministry noted that if the United States is keen on negotiating, it should go back to the Joint Commission of the JCPOA that it abandoned and lift all sanctions and stop its illegal activities.

The statement added: "It will be US’ absolute defeat at the international stage that will prove Iran's superior diplomatic power. So such an approach must be strongly pursued and we should not let the US get out of the situation it wants to escape.

The statement underscored that contrary to some misconceptions, this position is a symbol of Iran's power, and it is the United States that is willing to disrupt the JCPOA table, which it considers a trap for its own sake with all kinds of deceptions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to defending the dignity of the Islamic Republic by utilizing its legal and diplomatic abilities and has succeeded, in the international arena, by relying on the strategic support and guidance of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in representing the Islamic Republic in the region and the wider world, despite the unlawful pressures and efforts of the United States of America.

Following Zarif's interview with Der Spiegel on Iran-US relations and Trump's distorted speech on Twitter, a wave of reactions among proponents and opponents of diplomacy and government was generated.

The Foreign Ministry in the statement warned of the factional use of national issues, stressing that the dichotomy of "negotiation-non-negotiation" in the current context of foreign policy and domestic electoral environment, will have detrimental effects on Iran's national interests and public confidence.
