Chabahar (IP) - Strengthening and enhancing maritime trade security and combating piracy are the main aims of the trilateral drill, Rear Admiral Gholamreza Tahani said.

Iran Press/Iran News: A spokesman for the Iran-Russia-China joint naval exercises said that the surface, subsurface, and air combat units from Iran, Russia, and China's Navies have participated in the exercise.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Iran Press news agency on Friday, Rear Admiral Gholamreza Tahani said, this is the first trilateral compound marine exercise to be conducted ever at a very broad marine region between the three naval powers, "the Islamic Republic of Iran, Russia, and China."

"Strengthening and enhancing maritime trade security in the northern Indian Ocean region, combating piracy in the region, exchanging experience in the area of maritime rescue and exchanging tactical and operational experiences from older personnel to the younger generation are the most important goals of this training," he reiterated.

He concluded, " veteran units have participated in this exercise. Combat-capable units of all surface, subsurface and aerial dimensions have participated in the exercise."

Iran, Russia, and China have begun a four-day joint maritime exercise codenamed "Marine Security Belt," in the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman area on Friday morning.

According to Rear Admiral Gholamreza Tahani, a variety of exercises, including day and night maritime tactical exercises, will be performed using all the capabilities of the units participating in the exercise and exercise will be conducted in the northern Indian Ocean region and in open waters, covering an area of 17,000 square kilometers.

The event is the first such cooperation with Iran since the 1979 victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution and it comes amid US efforts to woo countries into a maritime coalition for patrols in the Persian Gulf, which have received a lukewarm welcome from its allies.205
