US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said the US is prepared to impose unilateral sanctions against Chinese companies buying oil from Iran.

Iran PressAsia: "It violates US law," he was quoted saying in an interview with pro-Donald Trump American radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt on Friday.

"And to the extent, there is a Chinese entity or a Chinese company that is purchasing products from Iran that violate our laws, we're going to do everything we can to enforce those sanctions against every violator of our restrictions," the former spy chief added.

Pompeo's anti-Iran stands in which he mirrors US President Donald Trump have stepped after the he unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions including on Iran's oil industry.

Iran slammed the US policy of resorting to sanctions as economic terrorism and retaliated by scaling back its obligations under the deal in 2019.

On Tuesday, Beijing expressed its objection to Washington's unilateral sanctions and its self-declared "long-arm jurisdiction", rejecting the new round of US sanctions against Iran and China.

"We are against unilateral sanctions and the so-called 'long-arm jurisdiction' and believe wanton use or threat of sanctions won't solve any problem," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said in response to sanctions against Iranian and Chinese entities.

Geng urged the US to "cease immediately the wrongful sanctions" on Chinese businesses and said, "We will continue to staunchly defend Chinese enterprises' legitimate rights and interests."
