Tehran (IP) - Dianne Feinstein underlined it is in the US national interests to help Iran to fight with coronavirus.

Iran Press/America: In a letter to the US President Donald Trump, a top Democratic senator has called for approving Iran’s request for receiving a $5bn loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), saying “it is in our national interest” to help Iran contain the spread of the coronavirus.

"Providing these funds to Iran would help it respond more effectively to the disease and mitigate the risk of further destabilization in the region," Feinstein said in the letter to Donald Trump late on Thursday.

She has revealed the letter in a Tweet on his account.

Feinstein's request comes amid many other pleas made by rights groups, world leaders and US lawmakers for Washington to reduce sanctions against Iran.

Responding to the discriminatory behavior of the IMF, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran said on Wednesday that the top financial organization must fulfill its commitments.

"We are a member of the International Monetary Fund and the request we made for the loan but we see that there is a discrimination in the body to pay the loans which is not acceptable," Rouhani said.

After Trump’s decision in 2018 to leave the deal, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Washington reimposed illegal sanctions against Iran, which are limiting Iran’s ability in fighting with the spread of coronavirus.
