Iran Press/ Asia: The death toll in Türkiye following Monday’s earthquake has risen to 21,848, according to President Tayyip Erdoğan.
Türkiye’s president has raised the total death toll from Monday’s earthquakes, bringing the total confirmed dead in Turkey and Syria above 25,000.
Five days after the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, teams are rushing to save victims that could still be alive under rubble, with a UN liaison officer in Türkiye warning that they are "approaching the end of the search and rescue window."
The news agency Agence France-Presse has reported that 3,553 people have died in Syria.
This would take the combined number of fatalities for Türkiye and Syria to 25, 401.
The death toll from the earthquake is likely to “more than double”, according to a UN emergency relief coordinator.
Martin Griffiths said he expected tens of thousands more deaths.
A border crossing between Armenia and Türkiye opened for the first time in 35 years on Saturday, to allow humanitarian aid through, an official said.
Five trucks with aid, including food, water, and medicine, arrived in Turkey from the Alican border crossing, tweeted Serdar Kilic, Türkiye’s special envoy for dialogue with Armenia.
