Iraq not to enter anti Iran alliance

Iraqi Foreign Minister assured Russia that Baghdad will not enter any treaty against Iran.

Iran Press/Iran news: In a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart in Moscow, Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Alhakim also said: "Military and security cooperation with Russia guarantees defeat of ISIS in Iraq and Syria and unity in Syria is considered as the key factor for the country’s stability.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in his part, emphasized on the importance of security on the border between Iraq and Syria.

Lavrov went on to say: “Russia will help Iraq develop its military capabilities and expects the US not to follow other goals in Iraq.”

Russian top diplomat also said: “The US presence in Iraq should be in coordination with the Iraqi government and Americans should not follow secret goals in the country.”

On Jan. 17, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in reaction to US Secretary of States' remarks in Iraq said, long before US came into existence, Iran and Iraq had friendly relations and this good neighbourly relations are set to continue.

On Jan. 9, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking in the Jordanian capital Amman said the United States is redoubling its diplomatic and commercial efforts to counter Tehran's influence in the region.

One day after Pompeo's remarks, Zarif responded by saying: Pompeo's claim that "when America retreats, chaos often follows," is simply untrue. Actually the opposite is the case.

Top officials from Iran and Iraq held talks on Jan. 11 on ways to boost cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, just one day after a surprise visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Iraq, which was supposed to convince Baghdad to restrict its ties with Tehran.
