Iranian woman chess player Sarasadat Khademalsharieh bagged a silver medal at World Rapid and Blitz Chess Competition (WRBCC) 2018 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Iran Press/Iran news: Iranian woman chess player Sarasadat Khademalsharieh bagged the silver medal with seven wins, four draws and one loss.

The world’s strongest chess players have competed at WRBCC 2018 where only those with chess ratings over 2,500 are accepted, Iran Press reported.

Also a very confident Iranian chess player Alireza Firouzja ranked sixth at WRBCC 2018 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Alireza Firouzja, 15, who was national champion at 12 and a grandmaster at 14, is one among many current teenage prodigies.

The big surprise of day one, Alireza Firouzja, started day three with all guns blazing, getting two straight victories to find himself in the big chasing pack. A loss against Anton Korobov prevented him from sharing second place, but his 10/15 performance gave him a whopping 157-point boost to his rating.

The 169th seed is only 15-years-old and — together with Sarasadat Khademalsharieh — showed that Iranian chess players must be considered serious contenders in tournaments to come.

Four Iranian chess players took part in World Rapid and Blitz Chess Competition 2018, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, from Dec. 25-31.

The chess grandmasters Parham Maghsoodloo, Alireza Firouzja, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, and Sara Khademalsharieh represented the Islamic Republic in the competition.

Iranian players have shown an outstanding presence in international competitions during the past years. According to the latest FIDE ratings, in the ranking of countries, Iran moved one place up compared to last month with 2555 points, sitting in the 25th place. 101/201/211
