Syrian Foreign Minister arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, today, Saturday, to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries.

Iran PressMiddle East: This came in a statement to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, to the Iraqi News Agency.

Al-Sahaf added that Al-Mekdad will start his visit program, tomorrow, Sunday.

He also pointed out that the visit includes a meeting between the Syrian minister and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, then the three presidencies (the republic, the government and parliament) and the head of the Supreme Judicial Council.

Al-Sahhaf said that the visit will focus on the bilateral relations between Baghdad and Damascus and Iraq’s role in returning Syria to its seat in the Arab League.

The two ministers will also discuss “means of advancing relations to areas consistent with the interests of the two neighboring peoples.”

The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, had stated earlier that his country had actively contributed to Syria’s return to its seat in the League of Arab States.

It is also mentioned that Syria’s participation in the meetings of the Council of the Arab League and its affiliated organizations has been suspended since November 2011, due to the Syrian crisis. 219
