Tehran (IP) - The Head of the Medical Genetic Research Center, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences announced the gene transfer using the latest technology in the world to solve the problem of Thalassemia patients and stomach cancer sufferers.

Iran PressIran news: Mohammad Reza Abbaszadegan, Head of the Medical Genetic Research Center, at Medical Sciences of Mashhad University, said, "As one of the pioneering groups of gene therapy in Iran, this university has carried out gene transfer using the latest technology in the world."

"The action led to the design of a clinical trial of gene therapy for patients with stomach cancer and a gene modification plan for Thalassemia patients by transferring from the laboratory to the hospital," he added.

Thalassemia is an inherited (passed from parents to children through genes) blood disorder caused when the body doesn't make enough of a protein called hemoglobin, an important part of red blood cells.

Thalassemia is a treatable disorder that can be well-managed with blood transfusions and chelation therapy.
