Moscow(IP)- Iran's Foreign Minister said that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will be discussed in his upcoming meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister.

Iran PressEurope: According to Iran Press news agency, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who has traveled to Russia, told the reporters on Tuesday evening upon his arrival in Moscow:

"The window to Iran's nuclear negotiations, known as the JCPOA, is still open and one of the topics to be talked about with "Sergey Lavrov", the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, will be the JCPOA and the return of the parties to their commitments."

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran stated: "Russia played an important role in the new round of talks between Iran and the 4+1 that lasted for months in Vienna."

Amir -Abdollahian also said about the US concern about the defense cooperation between Russia and Iran, referring to the "Wall Street Journal's" claim of receiving surveillance and cyber equipment from Russia in exchange for sending drones from Iran to that country, adding: "For Sure, defense cooperation is one of the topics on the joint agenda of Tehran and Moscow, while cooperation between Iran and Russia will not be against any side."

The developments in Syria, Afghanistan, the Caucasus, the South-South Corridor, and the Caspian issue are among other topics on the agenda in the Lavrov-Amir-Abdollahian upcoming meeting.  

In his assessment of the relations between Iran and Russia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran stated:

" The various cases of relations between the two countries have been fully activated in various fields and both sides are satisfied with the progress of relations in all areas of cooperation in line with the interests of the two nations and the two countries."

In this trip, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Kanaani, Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy, Mahdi Safari, and Special envoy of the Iranian President for Afghanistan Hassan Kazemi Qomi, are accompanying Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

Russia plays key role in new round of  JCPOA talks

Hossein Amir-Abdullahian pointed out: Our colleagues in Russia continue their efforts to return all parties to the talks, and naturally, one of the subjects of the talks will be the JCPOA.

Iran and Russia have developed ties in various fields like economy, trade, politics, and tourism, Iran's Foreign Minister noted.

“Relations between Russia and Iran are developing dynamically,” he said.

Regarding the US's concern about the defense cooperation between Russia and Iran,  Amir-Abdullahian said: The two sides will expand and develop defense cooperation.

Reminding his meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov,  Amir-Abdullahian continued: The main focus of the talks with Lavrov are bilateral issues and there are still many issues that need to be more actively addressed.

He added: We will also discuss regional and international issues, with focusing on regional crises.

Hossein Amir-Abdullahian is scheduled to meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Mar. 29, 2023.

The foreign ministers are supposed to exchange views on current international issues, including Iran's nuclear agreement known as the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), Syria, Afghanistan, the South Caucasus, and the Caspian Sea, among other issues.
