The President of the European Commission has said that there is no clear timeline for when Ukraine may be able to join the European Union.

Iran PressEurope: Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will depend on how fast it will meet the conditions required for membership, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a Ukrainian-EU summit on Friday.

Speaking alongside European Council President Charles Michel and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at an EU-Ukraine summit in Kyiv, Ursula von der Leyen said "the accession process is a merits-based process.

"There are no rigid timelines but there are goals that you have to reach," she said, according to a broadcast provided by the EU.

The commission earlier on Friday published an analysis of Ukraine’s readiness to join the EU that said Kiev is at the initial phase of meeting the accession conditions. The commission will release the next assessment of Ukraine's readiness in the fall. 219
