Rome (IP)- Workers of Italian steel production industries went on strike as the crisis worsened in these industries and in protest of the uncertainty of their future.

Iran PressEurope: Hundreds of workers of the multinational consortium ArcelorMittal in Italy held a protest rally in front of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development in Rome on behalf of other workers in the country.

The multinational consortium ArcelorMittal, which has been managing Europe's largest steel complex in Italy for about five years, is now at risk of closure with the lowest production capacity in the last four decades.

During this time, nearly 5,000 of its 11,000 employees in southern and northern Italy have been fired.

One of the protesting workers told the Iran Press reporter in Rome: "Currently, 2,500 workers have lost their jobs in the steel factory of Taranto (southern Italy) and are receiving unemployment benefits."

The Italian protestor stated: "Even many workers who are working now have not been paid bonus for New Year's holiday."

Meanwhile, the Italian government announced that due to the unprecedented increase in the cost of energy in the country, it will provide financial assistance of more than 700 million euros to this steel complex.

This is while the workers have announced that financial aid to the consortium is not enough and its current management must be changed and the government should take over the administration of the large industrial group.
