Tehran (IP) - The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that the provisions of the US 2023 national defense law reflect the American hostile beliefs and interventionist policies toward Iran, especially with regard to its nuclear program.

Iran PressIran News: Reacting to the Iranophobic and hostile content of the US 2023 national defense law, the Spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nasser Kanani said the baseless propositions came as the US unilaterally withdrew from an internationally-signed agreement (the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal).

Iran's international nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed between the country and the P5+1 group (Russia, China, the UK, France, the US, and Germany) in 2015, but the US withdrew from the agreement on May 18, 2018, re-imposing more sanctions on Iran.

"By unilaterally withdrawing from the JCPOA, the US government committed a violation of international covenants and laws.Although Iran has not reached its full rights in the JCPOA, the country has helped preserve the deal through diplomatic initiatives and flexibility," Kanani said.

Kanani noted that Iran's cooperation with other countries, including defense cooperation, was defined within the framework of common interests and based on international law.

He recalled that the US itself had arms sales contracts and military cooperation in the region, and by establishing numerous bases there, it put regional peace and stability at stake.

Stressing that nuclear weapons had no place in Iran's defense doctrine, the Iranian diplomat added: "As a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the safeguard agreement, Iran is familiar with its rights and duties."

He said that waging Iranophobia through propaganda against Iran's nuclear program did not help legitimize the US sanctions against the Iranian nation.
