Iran Press/ Iran news: According to the statistics of the water company in West Azerbaijan, in December 2022, the level of Lake Urmia reached 1,270 meters and 10 centimeters, which is a decrease of 46 centimeters compared to the same period last year.
According to the announcement of the Urmia lake restoration headquarters, the ecological level of the lake, i.e., the condition in which the Urmia lake reaches a sustainable environment, is 1,274 meters and 10 centimeters, and now the water level of Urmia lake is four meters lower than its ecological level.IranPress reports from Lake Urmia clearly show the reduction of the ecological balance, and these days the lake is facing a severe crisis. According to Arezoo Ashrafizadeh, Director General of the Wetlands Protection and Restoration Office of Iran's Environmental Organization, due to the increased evaporation of Lake Urmia, if the water is not fully provided in the coming years, many parts of the lake will remain dry.
Due to the lack of supply, other parts of Lake Urmia would only be drained during a certain period of the year, and Lake Urmia would eventually become a seasonal wetland, said Ashrafizadeh. The Director General of the Wetland Protection and Restoration Office of Iran's Environmental Organization added that one of the most important ways to ensure the water share of the lake is the management of water consumption in the agriculture sector.
In order to secure the water rights of Lake Urmia, the Ministry of Agriculture has presented the model of sustainable cultivation and modification of the irrigation model to the farmers around this lake.
Lake Urmia is the most important tourist attraction of West Azerbaijan province. The restoration of the lake, in addition to preserving the environment and continuity of life, also helps develop tourism in northwest Iran.
