Rome (IP)- The high number of suicides in Italian prisons has become a serious crisis for the country.

Iran PressEurope: According to IranPress, based on the latest report of the organization that oversees the situation of prisoners in Italy, over the past 11 months, 79 prisoners in different cities have committed suicide in prison, 74 of them were men, and 5 were women.

The European Prison Observatory, directed by Mauro Palma, criticized the increase in suicides in the country's prisons and said that Italian prisons in 2022 recorded the highest number of suicides in the last ten years.

The European Prison Observatory is a project coordinated by the Italian Ngo Antigone and developed with financial support from the Criminal Justice Programme of the European Union. This is even though, in the past few years, protests against the poor conditions of Italian prisons have been held in front of some dungeons in the country.

The total number of suicide victims in Italian prisons in the last decade is 583.

The number of prisoners in Italy was more than 62,000 before the coronavirus pandemic, and nearly 5,000 were released due to the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, the capacity of Italian prisons is less than 45,000 people.

According to the report of the observatory body on the situation of prisoners in Italy, in most cases, prisoners suicide in the country were on holidays and by hanging themselves in their cells with shoelaces, suffocation with garbage bags, and suffocation with gas.

The Italian prison system is ruled by a law issued in 1975, which has since been modified many times, becoming more or less rigid according to contingencies and various real or claimed emergencies.
