Iran PressAmerica: The Permanent Mission of the Islamic of Iran to the United Nations sent a letter to the head of the Security Council, elaborating on the country’s reasons for its recent military action against terrorist groups in northern Iraq.

The Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations in New York emphasized that considering the destructive and chaotic actions of terrorist groups against the people and national security of Iran and ignoring repeated warnings and protests in this regard, Tehran had no choice but to exercise its right thus responded appropriately to terrorist attacks.

The representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the United Nations, in a letter to the periodic President of the Security Council, recalled the actions of the terrorist groups based in northern Iraq, and explained the reasons and motivations for military action against these groups.

Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations said that since 2016, these groups have carried out 49 terrorist attacks inside and near Iran's borders, resulting in 24 martyrs and 32 injuries, adding: "Based on reliable intelligence, all these terrorist attacks were planned, organized and executed from the northern region of Iraq."

The letter also said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly warned that terrorism is a common danger for the entire region, Iran, the government of Iraq and the government of Turkey, and the Iranian authorities have repeatedly expressed their opposition to the presence of military bases of anti-Iranian terrorist groups as well as the Zionists in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

It also added that Iran repeatedly told the central government of Iraq authorities as well as the Iraqi Kurdistan region that the terrorist groups' actions cannot be tolerated by Iran and these groups must be disarmed and their bases must be dismantled.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has demonstrated its firm belief in and genuine commitment to Iraqi sovereignty and territorial integrity by positively responding to and supporting the Iraqi Government's request to assist in the fight against ISIS and its affiliates that threatened Iraq's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly the existence of the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

In this regard, it is worth noting Martyr General Ghasem Soleimani's prominent and exceptional role in defeating ISIS wherein he significantly contributed and provided assistance to the Iraqi people and Government, particularly the officials of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, and was rightfully named the Hero of the Fight Against Terrorism and the General of Peace.

The Iran UN mission further said that the recent two rounds of attacks came after the terrorist groups' agents provoked Iran by their recent aggression on Iran's borders. 219
