Tehran (IP) - Tehran on Wednesday recalled its ambassador to Sweden for consultation in protest against a sentence handed down to an Iranian citizen.

Iran PressIran news: "The Islamic Republic of Iran, in protest at the statement and the illegal sentence issued in Sweden against Hamid Noury, has decided to recall its ambassador to Sweden for consultations," foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said in a statement.

The  Swedish court's verdict is based on baseless, distorted, and fabricated accusations," he added.

Last week, the Iranian foreign ministry summoned the Swedish charge d'affaires in Tehran to protest the verdict.

A group of Iranians held a rally outside Sweden’s Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, July 19, to protest a life sentence given to Iranian national Hamid Nouri by a Swedish court.

The protesters included the family of Nouri and a number of students as well as his friends and neighbors.

Nouri has been in custody in Sweden since 2019. He was arrested violently by the Swedish police upon his arrival in Stockholm on a tourist visa. 219
