US president says Washington would walk away from the stalled nuclear talks if returning to the JCPOA was contingent upon removing the IRGC from the US list of so-called foreign “terrorist” organizations.

Iran PressIran news: Iran says the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) should definitely be removed from the US list of so-called foreign “terrorist” organizations in order for an agreement to be reached in the Doha talks aimed at resurrecting the US-ditched Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

US President Joe Biden had an interview with the Israeli regime’s Channel 12 news hours before he set off from Washington for his first visit as president to the Middle East.

Biden said that the US would walk away from the stalled nuclear talks if returning to the pact was contingent upon removing the IRGC from the roster.

Any agreement for the US to rejoin the deal is “up to Iran now,” Biden said.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has rejected claims made by US officials about new demands raised by the Iranian delegation in Doha talks, saying the Islamic Republic’s requests are in line with the 2015 accord.

Iran and the US engaged in indirect talks in the Qatari capital of Doha, which were held in early July and mediated by the European Union. The talks are aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal and lifting sanctions on Iran.

“Contrary to media claims of the American side, we have put forward no excessive demand that goes beyond the framework of the JCPOA (the joint comprehensive plan of action),” Amir-Abdollahian said, adding that the demands are totally in line with the 2015 deal.

Biden also threatened that he would use force against Iran as a “last resort” to prevent it from what he called “obtaining nuclear weapons,” but stressed his preference to negotiate with the Iranians instead.

Iran categorically rejects such allegations against its peaceful nuclear program, saying its peaceful programs are being pursued in line with the country’s inherent rights and international commitments.

It was “a gigantic mistake” for former US President Donald Trump to pull out of the pact, Biden said. The 2015 deal was violated by the US in 2018 after then-president Donald Trump unilaterally pulled Washington out of the agreement and reinstated crippling economic sanctions on Iran under the so-called “maximum pressure policy.”

For one year, Iran observed “strategic patience” to see if European signatories to the deal can safeguard its economic interests. In May 2019, Tehran finally began scaling back its commitments under the agreement.
