Abuja(IP)- At least 600 inmates escaped a jailbreak in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, on Wednesday, following the Boko Haram terrorists' bombing attack.

Iran PressAfrica: At least 4,300 inmates have escaped Nigeria prisons since 2017, according to Lagos-based online newspaper TheCable.

According to President Muhammadu Buhari's spokesperson, Malam Garba Shehu, a few people died. In contrast, two others sustained injuries when a group of heavily armed bandits on Tuesday night attacked the advanced team of security guards, protocol, and media officers on their way to Daura, the hometown of the President.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Amin Umar Dayi was killed during the gun battle.

In the Press Statement to journalists on Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari's spokesperson said: "Those attackers opened fire on the convoy from ambush positions but were repelled by the military."

"Two persons in convoy are receiving treatment for their minor injuries, and a few personnel who lost their lives have been deposited at the hospital. All the other personnel, staff, and vehicles made it safely to Daura."

Nigerian President, who is expected to go to Daura of Katsina State for the Eid-el Adha celebration, is safe, according to the statement.

Residents disclosed that the shooters invaded the facility with heavy gunshots. A resident who did not reveal his name said many dead bodies were seen before the security evacuated them. He added that the shootings went on for more than an hour around the facility as the terrorists allegedly used bombs and other explosives in a break-in attempt.

Nigeria's Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi, said all Boko Haram takfiri terrorist inmates have escaped from the prison in the attack. While on the other hand, the former Governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, who was sentenced to 14 years in jail, and Deputy Police Commissioner Abba Kyari, Abdulrasheed Maina, who was the former Chairman of Nigeria's Pension Reform Task, served eight years in prison refused to escape despite the golden opportunity.

While speaking to journalists, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Haj Shuaib Balgere, said, "We don't know how many people were killed among the attackers, but it's quite possible that they took their injured ones and other casualties."
