UN (IP) - Iran's ambassador to the United Nations has said that imposing new sanctions on North Korea by the UN Security Council will not help resolve the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Iran PressAmerica: The UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting on May 11, 2022, to discuss North Korea's recent missile movements, but failed due to opposition received from China and Russia.

An extraordinary meeting of the 15-memberof UN Security council was convened at the request of the United States, which called North Korea's recent missile tests a 'clear violation of several Security Council resolutions'.

In this regard, and according to Iran press, Zahra Ershadi, the ambassador and deputy representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations on Wednesday at the UN General Assembly meeting on the veto of the US-backed resolution against North Korea by Russia and China said: "We emphasize the resolution of issues through dialogue, and to this end, we are ready to participate in any initiative that can fairly lead to a peaceful resolution of the current situation on the Korean Peninsula."

The Iranian ambassador and deputy representative to the United Nations added: "The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the main signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, is a staunch supporter of the complete elimination of nuclear weapons."

The senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran said: "Iran, as the main victim of the use of chemical weapons in contemporary history, has shown its full commitment to the complete elimination of all weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons."

Noting that the Security Council has not taken a balanced approach to the North Korean nuclear issue, focusing only on Western concerns, Ershadi said: "The imposition of sanctions on North Korea does not only serve international peace and security, but also It has intensified and complicated security arrangements on the Korean Peninsula.
