Tehran (IP) - The ruler of Dubai pledged allegiance to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the brother of the former UAE president after his death.

Iran PressMiddle East: According to Article 51 of the UAE Constitution, the Supreme Federal Council, composed of the rulers of the seven emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain, is responsible for electing the President and Vice President of the UAE from among its members for five years.

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan died on Friday at the age of 73.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, and the ruler of Dubai, pledged allegiance to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the President of the UAE.

According to the UAE Constitution, when the presidency becomes vacant, its powers are transferred to the Vice President. Hence, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, will run the country during the transition period.

Following the funeral of the UAE president, the UAE Federal Council is scheduled to hold a meeting to review the legal schedule and elect a new president.
