Incidents of anti-Muslim bias in the United States are on the rise, according to an annual report by CAIR, which found that a major contributor to this growth is government and law enforcement overreach.

Iran PressAmerica: In its annual report on the anti-Muslim bias, titled "Still Suspect: The Impact of Structural Islamophobia," the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reports a significant increase in bias incidents against Muslims in the United States.

CAIR's main areas of concern are immigration and travel, workplace discrimination, law enforcement and government overreach, denial of public accommodations, and hate and bias incidents. Combined, the incidents documented in the report have increased by 9% from 2020, the highest number the civil rights organization has witnessed since it started recording these incidents.

According to the report, CAIR received 6,720 complaints nationwide last year involving a range of issues, including immigration, travel discrimination, law enforcement, government overreach, hate and bias incidents, custody rights, school incidents, and free speech incidents.

"This represents the highest number of cases reported to CAIR in 27 years. This milestone is alarming," said CAIR’s National Executive Director Nihad Awad at the press conference.

Awad noted that the report speaks for itself, adding, "Islamophobia is structural and deep in our society.”

"Islamophobia has become mainstream in America. It made its way into the government institutions and public sphere through laws, policies, political rhetoric and other manifestations," he added.

"This shows the severity and intensity of Islamophobia," Huzaifa Shahbaz, CAIR national research and advocacy coordinator and the report's primary author, told The New Arab.
