Tehran (IP) - Iran's Islamic Azad Universities have condemned the desecration of the Quran in Sweden and called on all people who want freedom of expression, intellectuals, students, researchers and the entire scientific community to condemn this ignorant act.

Iran PressIran news: Last Friday, a group of Swedish right-wing extremists set fire to the Quran, the holy book of more than two billion Muslims in the world, under the pretext of the freedom of speech.

In a letter to the Sweden Embassy in Tehran, a number of Iran's Islamic Azad Universities said: "The Qur'an is undoubtedly an invincible book. The Qur'an is the divine book of the religion of Islam and flowed on the heart of the Prophet of Mercy, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)."

"Shameless insult to the sanctities of Islam is an example of ignorance in the modern world. The disrespect for the divine book that has taken place in Sweden in recent years is a sign of the doctrinal, intellectual and moral degeneration of people who given their knowledge of the legitimacy of the Qur'an, tend to deny it for personal gain," it added.

"Those who want democracy and freedom of expression should know that disrespecting the Qur'an is disrespecting all the divine books and human society. And Islam complements the religious content of all religions. Pursuant to Articles 19 and 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, any disrespect for public order and incitement to national or religious hatred which incites discrimination or strife is prohibited by law," they said in the letter.

"Islamic Azad Universities, while condemning this heinous act and expressing regret for its perpetrator, calls on all people who want freedom of expression, intellectuals, students, researchers and the entire book community to condemn this ignorant act. Legally and politically, we demand that this heinous act be countered per international law, and we are certainly its guardians," the letter stressed.
