South Korea reported 395,598 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Wednesday compared to 24 hours ago, New Zealand reported 18,423 new community cases of COVID-19, and India's COVID-19 tally rose to 43,014,687, the countries' health authorities said Thursday.

The daily caseload was down sharply from 490,881 in the previous day, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

The recent resurgence was driven by infections in the Seoul metropolitan area amid the Omicron variant spread.

Of the new cases, 77,768 were Seoul residents. The number of newly infected people living in Gyeonggi province and the western port city of Incheon was 107,472 and 24,689 respectively.

The virus spread also raged in the non-metropolitan region. The number of new infections in the non-capital areas was 185,602, or 46.9 percent of the total local transmission.

Among the new cases, 67 were imported, lifting the total to 30,818.

The number of infected people who were in a serious condition stood at 1,081.

A total of 470 more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 13,902. The total fatality rate was 0.13 percent.

The country has administered COVID-19 vaccines to 44,936,300 people, or 87.6 percent of the total population, and the number of fully inoculated people was 44,465,651, or 86.6 percent of the population.

The number of those who received booster jabs was 32,483,092 people, or 63.3 percent of the population.

New Zealand reports 18,423 new community cases of COVID-19

New Zealand reported 18,423 new community cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

Among the new community infections, 3,629 were in the largest city Auckland. The rest of the cases were identified across the nation, including 3,150 in Canterbury, according to the ministry.

In addition, there were 44 new cases of COVID-19 detected at the New Zealand border, said the ministry.

There were 913 COVID-19 patients in New Zealand hospitals, including 28 people in intensive care unit or high dependency unit.

The ministry also reported 11 deaths from COVID-19, taking the total number of publicly reported deaths in the country to 221, it said.

New Zealand has reported 556,049 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

New Zealand announced on Wednesday that it will remove most COVID-19 restrictions. From midnight this Friday, outdoor gathering limits will be lifted, and indoor gathering limits at the current highest Red settings of the COVID-19 Protection Framework will double from 100 to 200, but wearing mask will still be mandatory.

India's COVID-19 tally rises to 43,014,687

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 43,014,687 on Thursday, as 1,938 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

In the meantime, 67 deaths due to the pandemic since Wednesday morning took the total death toll to 516,672.

There are still 22,427 active COVID-19 cases in the country as there was a fall of 660 active cases during the past 24 hours.

So far 42,475,588 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals, out of which 2,531 were discharged during the past 24 hours, Xinhua quoted Indian health authorities.
