Tehran (IP) – Senior advisor to the Iranian foreign minister has stressed that Iran has always supported and will continue to support the United Nations’ efforts to strengthen the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, encourage Syrian-Syrian dialogue and establish peace and stability in this country.

Iran PressIran News: Ali-Asghar Khaji, Senior Advisor to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs, met on Saturday with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen to discuss the latest developments in the Syrian crisis, the fight against sanctions, and sending humanitarian aid to the people of this country.

“Iran has always supported and will continue to support the United Nations’ efforts to strengthen Syria’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, to encourage Syrian-Syrian dialogue, and to establish peace and stability in the country,” the senior adviser to the foreign minister said.

“The Syrian government and people have stood up to ISIS and other terrorist groups for more than 10 years, and now it has reached relative stability and its relations with the countries of the region are increasing, and the United Nations and other regional actors and the international community are needed to pay attention to these conditions of the Syrian government and people, and intensify the current efforts to lift the sanctions, provide assistance to the people, return the refugees and start rebuilding the country,” he noted.

Pedersen, who led a delegation to Tehran, lauded Iran’s efforts in cooperating with the United Nations, as well as in the Astana peace process, intending to strengthen the political settlement of the Syrian crisis and support the Syrian national dialogue, and stressed the need for continued cooperation.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides stressed the need to strengthen joint consultations in the future.
