The US added more than 1 million people to its Covid-19 case count on Monday as the true scope of a surge in infections over the holidays began to round into view.

Iran PressAmerica: The United States set a global record of almost 1 million new coronavirus infections reported on Monday, according to a Reuters tally, nearly double the country's peak hit just a week ago as the highly contagious Omicron variant shows no sign of slowing.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has risen nearly 50% in the last week and now exceeds 100,000, a Reuters analysis showed, the first time that threshold has been reached since the winter surge a year ago.

US President Joe Biden has urged concern but not alarm as his administration struggles to ease concerns about COVID-19 after the country saw a record 1 million daily cases.

Washington, D.C., and Florida have had the largest jumps in new cases in the last two weeks. Covid cases increased by 902 percent in Washington in that time, while cases in Florida rose by 744 percent, according to an analysis of state and local health data.

More than 820,000 Covid-19 deaths have been reported in the United States in total, the highest known number of any country. There have been more than 5.4 million deaths globally. 219
