Five people were reported dead and hundreds of others were stranded after a snowstorm pummeled the South and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Meanwhile, on  Tuesday thousands of people were trapped in their vehicles for hours along a nearly 50-mile stretch of motorway in Virginia. Hundreds of flights were canceled and one airport on the eastern seaboard closed on Monday.

In Maryland, three people died after their vehicle collided with a snowplow on Monday evening, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

According to NBC News, two children, aged 5 and 7, died after trees fell on their homes in Tennessee and Georgia.

The US National Weather Service said the Washington DC area had experienced thundersnow – a rare phenomenon when thunder and lightning occur during a snowstorm.

The storm dropped more than 14 inches of snow in parts of Northern Virginia, while Washington DC recorded more than eight inches, according to the National Weather Service. 219
