UN Security Council calls for an end to Ethiopia fighting

On Friday, the United Nations Security Council has for the first time called for an end to hostilities in Ethiopia, urging the warring sides to negotiate a “lasting ceasefire”.

In a joint press statement, the 15 members of the UN’s most powerful body “expressed deep concern about the expansion and intensification of military clashes in northern Ethiopia”.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister on November 4, 2020, ordered an attack on the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, after accusing the forces of the Tigray Liberation Front of attacking its forces.

Conflict in northern Ethiopia has so far displaced more than 2.5 million people and left at least 400,000 hungry and starving.

In recent months, mediation by international bodies such as the United Nations and the African Union to resolve the crisis has not been accepted by either side.
