Iran Press/ Europe: Britain's competition watchdog fined Facebook 50.5 million pounds ($69.4 million) on Wednesday for violating rules during the UK investigation into the social media giant’s purchase of Giphy.
The Competition and Markets Authority said Facebook failed to provide the required information during the probe. It said it gave the platform multiple warnings and “considers that Facebook’s failure to comply was deliberate.″
Facebook has come under pressure from several regulators in recent months for violating business laws.
The US company bought the Giphy platform for 317 million pounds last year to make its content available to Instagram and other Facebook affiliates.
Frances Haugen, a former content director at Facebook, appeared in the US Senate two weeks ago to say that the company should not be trusted. The former Facebook official, whose revelations have shaken the world's largest social network, accused Mark Zuckerberg and his company of deliberately promoting products that harm children and teens to increase their profits.
Frances Haugen is scheduled to testify in the British Parliament next week. 219
