United Nations Secretary-General has appreciated the efforts of Iran in generously hosting Afghan refugees.

Iran PressIran news: António Guterres in a phone call on Thursday congratulated Hossein Amir-Abdollahian over his appointment as Iran's Foreign Minister stressed his commitment to supporting Iran's efforts to host the refugees.

Guterres described Iran as a very influential country among the UN members and called for close cooperation with the President and Foreign Minister.

Guterres called the United Nations a supporter of the agreement and dialogue as the mainstay and called for the resumption of the Vienna nuclear talks.

He also stressed the United Nations' commitment to safeguarding Palestinian rights.

For his part, Amir-Abdollahian stressed the readiness of the Islamic Republic of Iran to cooperate with the Secretary-General to resolve the current political situation in Afghanistan.

Referring to the new wave of refugees, he expressed serious concern and stressed the need for assistance from relevant organizations at the United Nations.

Regarding the Vienna talks, the Iranian Foreign Minister stressed the commitment to dialogue and negotiation as a tool of diplomacy, adding: "Unfortunately, the Americans, with the continuation of their illegal sanctions, have been miscalculated and think that they can use it as a bargaining leverage."

Amir-Abdollahian said: "The negotiating parties should come to Vienna with a realistic understanding and pay serious attention to the rights and interests of the Iranian people, and in our opinion, only negotiations that have a tangible result are acceptable."

Expressing concern over terrorist movements in Afghanistan and the region, the Iranian Foreign Minister lamented the use of terrorism by some powers as the main obstacle to peace, stability, and tranquility in the region.

Amir-Abdollahian and the UN Secretary-General stressed the need for a fully inclusive government with the role of all Afghan ethnic groups and said that war and violence should not rule Afghanistan.

Referring to the assassination of General Soleimani, the Iranian Foreign Minister said: "We are seriously pursuing the case in the legal and international dimensions and the United States can not abdicate its definite responsibility in the assassination of this great hero of the fight against terrorism."

Referring to the actions of the Zionist regime, he stressed: "The Zionist regime continues to openly commit its crimes in the occupied territories, and the international community and the United Nations have a definite duty to uphold the Palestinian cause and the rights of women and children of defenseless Palestinians."
