At least eight people have been reported missing as the wildfire continues to rip through northern California, destroying hundreds of homes and incinerating entire communities as firefighters seek to contain the blaze.

Iran PressAmerica: At least eight people were missing on Saturday as what has become the largest single wildfire in California’s recorded history continued to scorch through northern communities, forest and tinder-dry scrub in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

According to US media, The Pulmas County Sheriff’s Office said on Saturday that it had received reports of “eight unaccounted for individuals” related to the Dixie Fire, which has now spread to an area of 1,807 square kilometers (698 square miles) and is just 21 percent contained.

Five of the missing belong to the old mining town of Greenville where blazes leveled most of its downtown, about 160 miles north of Sacramento.

The cause of the fire is listed as unknown but remains under investigation. 219
