The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen welcomed the European Union's decision to sanction certain Lebanese officials and entities on Friday.

Iran PressAmerica: "As an increasing number of Lebanese suffer from the country's worsening economic crisis, it is critical that Lebanese leaders heed their people's repeated calls for an end to widespread corruption and government inaction and form a government that can initiate the reforms critical to address the country’s dire situation," the two stated.

Earlier on Friday, the EU adopted a legal framework to sanction several Lebanese individuals and entities for failing to address the crisis in the country properly.

The United States welcomes the EU’s adoption of a new sanctions regime to promote accountability and reform in Lebanon, the joint statement reads.

The statement came after Najib Mikati secured enough votes in parliamentary consultations on Monday to be designated prime minister to forming a government to tackle a financial crisis.
