Heavy rains in western and northwestern Europe cause a devastating flood, killing 126 people and leaving hundreds missing.

Iran PressEurope: At least 126 people have died and dozens of people were missing Thursday in Germany and neighboring Belgium after heavy flooding turned streams and streets into raging torrents, sweeping away cars and causing buildings to collapse.

“Some parts of Western Europe ... received up to two months of rainfall in the space of two days. What made it worse is that the soils were already saturated by previous rainfall,” World Meteorological Organization spokesperson Clare Nullis said.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized unity Friday.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo shared similar sentiments. Belgium will hold a national day of mourning on July 20 for the victims of the flood, with De Croo announcing the country stands "shoulder to shoulder."

Floods in Luxembourg, Switzerland and the Netherlands have also caused damage. Thousands of people have been reported evacuated from the Dutch city of Maastricht. 219
