Nine dead, nine missing in eastern China hotel collapse

The collapse of a hotel in the Chinese city of Suzhou left at least nine people dead and 9 others missing; the rescue operation is underway for twenty-three trapped under collapsed building.

Iran PressAsia: The hotel building collapsed Monday afternoon and most people in the building at the time were hotel guests, the official reports indicated.

Rescuers used cranes, ladders, metal cutters, and search dogs to look for survivors. Twenty-three people were trapped while six have been rescued, CCTV reported.

More than 600 people including earthquake rescue teams and 120 vehicles have been mobilized for the operation.

Suzhou city is in Jiangsu province near Shanghai.

The cause of the collapse is still unclear.

Building disasters and other similar catastrophes are not uncommon in China. A fire broke out at a martial arts training center in China's Henan province last month, killing at least 18 people.
