Tehran (IP) - The Iranian Agriculture Minister says the ministry has proposed a comprehensive plan to the government to combat drought and maintain food security for the people.

Iran PressIran news: On the sidelines of an event on the occasion of ‘World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought’ on Saturday, Kazem Khavazi said in response to Iran Press’ question over the agriculture ministry’s plans for food security amid an almost unprecedented drought in Iran: "We have proposed a comprehensive plan to the government that the government is reviewing". 

According to the Iranian Agriculture Minister, the plan includes loans for producers, lending for inputs, and many other issues that can ensure food security in the country. 

Food security, as defined by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, means that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life.

The Iranian minister of agriculture expressed hope that with the approval of the plan, farmers would be able to continue their work in a favorable condition.

Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture has organized an event on Saturday to review the solutions to fight against desertification.

The event was held on the occasion of the ‘World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought’ with the attendance of the Iranian Agriculture Minister Kazem Khavazi and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative to Iran, Gerold Bödeker.

The event is celebrated each year on 17 June. Its purpose is to raise awareness about desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought.
