The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) stated that Resistance and its weapons remain a national right as long as the occupation persists, a right recognized by international conventions and norms. Hamas also described Witkoff’s visit to aid distribution centers as a pre-planned show.

Why it matters:

Hamas’s emphasis on the continuation of armed resistance underscores the movement’s refusal to surrender under the Israeli and U.S. pressure, even if the U.S. representative comes to Gaza to influence the general public in favor of the Israeli regime.

What they are saying:

Hamas: “This right is recognized by international conventions and norms and will not be relinquished until full restoration of national rights, including the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

The big picture:

The statement came in response to a visit on Saturday by Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Representative for West Asia, to humanitarian aid distribution centers in the Gaza Strip.

"Witkoff’s claims about the 'peaceful distribution of aid' are misleading, stating that such assertions contradict the reality on the ground, including the death of over 1,300 people from hunger."

Key points:

  • The visit served to politically cover the occupation’s continued “management of hunger” and killing of children and civilians in Gaza.
  • The statement calls the U.S. a “full partner in the crime of starvation and genocide.”
  • Hamas reaffirmed that resistance and its weapons are a national right and would not be abandoned until full national rights, including the establishment of a Palestinian state, are restored.
