A record-breaking heatwave covering western Canada killed at least 69 people in the Vancouver area.

Iran PressAmerica: Most of the dead in the Vancouver suburbs over the past 24 hours were elderly or those with underlying health conditions, according to media reports citing British Columbia's police.

The heatwave has made schools and COVID-19 vaccination centers close in the Vancouver area.

Temperatures in the U.S. Pacific Northwest cities of Portland, Oregon, Seattle and Washington reached levels not seen since record-keeping began in the 1940s: 46 degrees in Portland and 42 in Seattle.

Climate change is causing record-smashing temperatures to become more prevalent. Globally, the decade to 2019 was the hottest recorded, and the five hottest years have all happened within the last five years.
