Zarif meets influential Iraqi Shia political figures

Baghdad (IP) - The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran met with influential Iraqi Shia political leaders and figures in Baghdad.

Iran PressMiddle East: The meeting, which took place on Monday night, was attended by leaders of influential Iraqi Shia groups such as Sayyed Ammar Hakim, leader of the National Wisdom Movement, and Sheikh Humam Hamoudi of Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council.

The meeting was also attended by Nouri al-Maliki, Adil Abdul Mahdi, and Haidar al-Abadi, three former Iraqi prime ministers, and Hanan al-Fatlawi.

Al-Fatlawi is from Babil province and the head of the Iraqi Eradaa Movement, which has several seats in parliament; she is the only Iraqi woman to lead a political organization. She is already a member of parliament with widespread popular support.

Hadi al-Amiri, a former Iraqi government official, also attended a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Zarif, who met extensively with Iraqi political officials on Monday, including the Iraqi president, prime minister, speaker of parliament, and foreign minister, met with influential Iraqi Sunni politicians and several other Iraqi political and tribal leaders.

Zarif today, Tuesday, after a meeting with Iraqi academic figures, in the Kurdish region of Iraq, will also meet with regional officials.
